Out of Shape

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about and workshopping different ways to prepare for auditions, and I’ve come to a realization. Much of the time, when I think I’m practicing for an audition, what I’m actually doing is simply getting back into shape.

I end up wasting lots of time because my fingers hurt and I have to stop playing, or my hand is pumped and I can’t maintain good technique. The time I spend getting my muscles and callouses back in order is time not spent getting better at my rep.

So here’s what I’m gonna do about it: even (especially) when I have no auditions, I’m going to commit to a regular fitness-maintenance routine - scales, bowing, strength training - so that next audition I’m ready to start my prep from 100%.
